Professional Highlights: Maged previously worked at Sunderland Eye Infirmary, one of the best and largest tertiary referral centre in the UK from 2001-2024 and still holds a position of Visiting Professor at the Biosciences Institute / School of Computing, Newcastle University.
As a retina specialist, he co-led the South-of-the-Tyne Diabetic Retinopathy screening program. As Chief and primary applicant of multiple large clinical studies as well as Investigator Initiated Trials, his research passion led him to collaborate with Newcastle, Durham and Lincoln Universities (UK) in developing artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for detecting and monitoring diabetic eye disease and predicting treatment outcomes.

 

Career: Following his Masters’ Degree in Ophthalmology from Ain Shams University in Cairo he attained the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London, Maged was subsequently awarded a Doctorate of Medicine, MD degree from Newcastle University.

Maged completed his Vitreoretinal Fellowship at Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, UK and has been a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon since 2011. He pursued his research ambitions and led one of the most active research units in UK, exploring novel treatments for restoring and improving vision as a Principle Investigator for more than 10 international clinical trials. Maged is a recognised international speaker in ophthalmic congresses. He has vast experience in the management of complex Macular Degeneration cases as well as Diabetic Eye Disease, together with surgical repair of various retinal and macular disorders.
